Daniel Berlant has been a member of the Auburn City Council since December 2014, serving as Mayor in 2020. As a lifelong Auburn resident, Berlant has a long history of service in the community and region as a public safety official, as well as a former school board trustee.
With over a decade in public safety, Berlant serves California’s fire department as an assistant deputy director overseeing many of the State’s fire prevention programs. Berlant is the liaison between the City Council and the Greater Auburn Area Fire Safe Council, where he has served over multiple years as the Chair.
Berlant serves on the follow Boards:
• Placer County Air Pollution Control District
• Placer County Flood Control and Water Conservation District (Alternate)
• Sacramento Area Council of Governments (Alternate)
Berlant also serves as the City Council Liaison on the following committees:
• Auburn Traffic Committee
• Greater Auburn Area Fire Safe Council
• Old Town Business Association
• Transient-Homeless Task Force
Berlant is a founding member of the Auburn Community Service Day. The event which has grown to a day that draws over a hundred volunteers that work at over a dozen locations across the area beautifying, cleaning, and helping those in need.
Berlant served as a Board of Trustee for the Auburn Union School District for nearly five years, four of which as Board President. During his tenure at the Auburn Union School District he successfully worked to restructure the finances of the financially struggling district and got a 3-year balanced budget passed, which has resulted in long term financial stability for the district.
In December 2012 Berlant was named by the Sacramento Business Journal as one of the Sacramento regions “Top 40 under 40”. An award he credits to the hard work of helping to solve Auburn Union School District’s budget crisis. In November 2013, Berlant was honored by the Placer County School Boards Association as an “Outstanding Trustee of the Year”.
Growing up in Auburn, Berlant is a product of Auburn’s schools including Placer High School and a graduate of the University of California, Davis. Berlant is also a member of the Auburn Kiwanis Club. He is married to his wife Kristen, who like him, grew up in Auburn. Kristen is a teacher in the area. The two can often be seen around town with their young son, and dog Denali.
